 Dramatic irony in English literature-what is irony in literature

 The use of words to convey the opposite of their literal meaning.A statement or situation where the meaning is contradicted by the appearance or presentation of the idea.



Common Interesting Irony

- "Brutus is an honourable man"

- He is a brilliant student because he failed in the exam.

- The butter is as soft as a marble piece.

- The name of Britain`s biggest dog was "tiny"

- 'The boy showed his merit by making twenty mistakes in ten minutes'

- My name is Ozymandias ,King of king.


Others examples of Irony

 Example no 1:

rony examples are not only found in stage plays but in poems too. In his poem " The Rime of the Ancient mariner", Coleridge worte:

"Water ,Water,Everywhere,

And all the boards did shrink;

Water ,Water ,everywhere,

Nor any drop to drink."

Example no 2:

 " Go ask his name : if he be married .My Grave is like to be my weeding bed."

Juliet commands her burse to find out who Romeo was and says if hr were married ,then her wedding bed would be her grave.it is a verbal irony because the audiance knows that she is going to die on her weeding bed.

Example no 3:

In the English drama"King Lear" written by shakespeare,

King Lear banished his youngest daughter cordelia from his kingdom;but in the end,she became his only shelter.
